A Letter from Rosaline
We are now about a week and a half into rehearsing Love's Labour's Lost for Revolution Shakespeare, and God, but I'm having a ball. Last night was our first full-company music rehearsal, and I think the feeling in the air can be best described as glee. This is the most fun-loving company I have ever had the privilege of working with. Musically, we're an ensemble of guitars, ukulele, flute, cello, fully decked out drum set, voices, and more–– we're an eclectic group, and it feels like everyone is having so much damn fun putting our pieces together into a product I never could have imagined would be possible. And it's so freaking exciting.
Love's Labour's is a really difficult show-- it's one of Shakespeare's earliest plays, and just one speech in you can tell he's having a lot of fun flaunting his assets with pages and pages of incredibly flowery, gilded text. This is the play that has the longest word in the English language, the longest scene, and arguably the longest speech. It's a lot! It can be really difficult to find your way into a text that is so intellectual and heady, and even more difficult to pull a very dramatically "cliquey" play together into a cohesive production that really tells the story. But in the same way we all managed to jump in cold and start to create a really fantastic sound last night, we've really begun to knit together into an incredibly exciting ensemble that I'm perpetually thrilled to work with. I'm about to walk over to rehearsal tonight, where we're blocking the final part of the last scene of the show, and I'm more excited than ever. Can't wait to share this fantastic production with you all!
